In 1870 the Embankment in London was opened. What most people don’t know is that the embankment is a huge combined sewerage containment system which diverts raw sewage away from entering the river transporting it through tunnels out of the city. Joseph Bazalgette was the architect of this system which saved tens of thousands of lives.

Unfortunately, the system has now hit capacity and Thames Water have had to start a huge project to augment it my adding two more tunnels.  This project will costs several billions of pounds, but before it goes ahead, work must be carried out to prove that the system will operate as expected.

Three test tunnels have been constructed and instrumented with equipment measuring Dissolved Oxygen, PH, Temperature, RedOx, Dissolved Sulphides etc. There are also several instruments which measure the smell given off by the installation. As well as these measurements, several samplers must be triggered at precise intervals as the trial progresses.

Jigsaw have been asked to co-ordinate and log the data from these instruments, and to trigger the samplers, and warn staff when samples are available to be analysed through SMS texting.

Jigsaw are working with Thames Water on the largest engineering
 project proposed for this century.
